Realizing the importance of the water sector in the overall economic and social development of Jordan, the University of Jordan (UJ) established the Water and Environment Research and Study Centre as an independent research unit linked to the university president in 1982. More recently, energy was realized as another strong challenge to Jordan’s economic and social development as energy sources in Jordan are very limited. Taking this into consideration, the Energy Centre was established in the second half of 2006 to replace the Renewable Energy Office in order to be a pioneer in the development of renewable energy applications, conduct applied and innovative research that aims at increasing the efficiency in the energy sector and raising public awareness on energy related issues such as negative environmental impacts of traditional energy sources, the need to replace traditional energy sources with renewable ones and the need to save energy.

Prince Faisal Dead Sea Studies Centre was established at Mutah University in order to identify and provide direction to sources of information and data, experimental and numerical, on Jordan water, environmental and Dead Sea and energy issues.

The Jordanian Renewable Energy Society aims to stimulate the exploitation of Renewable Energy resources in Jordan, use energy efficiently and feasibly for the benefit of kingdom, invest in the know-how of renewable energy technology for the benefit society and concentrate on the future energy from the sun.

EDAMA, an Arabic word meaning “sustainability”, is an association formed as a private sector partnership that seeks innovative solutions for energy and water independence, and their positive reflection on the environment.
